I found the True or False questionnaire about CSA very enlightening and the scenarios, which were harrowing to read, provided a real glimpse into the troubled minds of these 'victims.' It is very helpful to know and understand the feelings and thought processes of 'sufferers' of these situations and how to deal sympathetically and respond in a caring and supportive way. It was especially beneficial to be able to go through these exercises - to pick up on listening skills, and know not to interrupt a quiet moment, but to wait patiently, enabling further information to come out.

…[it] indicates quite clearly just how easy it is for a church leader to give wrong advice and to say the completely wrong thing. What stood out for me in the real life situations which you include, is the immense influence for good or ill that a serving Bishop/Stake President can have on a member who comes to them with such challenges in their lives.

The questions that ran along side the various stories were very thought provoking and useful to allow people to reflect on what goes on in the victim's mind and the behaviour that they might demonstrate. Thanks for all you've taught me as I read it.

I thought that your counsel regarding "Appropriate Questioning" was most important.

This is a very needed work - I especially like the format. With it you draw in the counselor and affect his psyche as well. Your use of scenarios are just dynamite! Very good teaching tool.

I was not aware that abuse is out there. Skills very appropriate in any situation. Very comprehensive. Makes me aware more. It is good.

You are doing a special and much needed work, and you are doing it with your usual level of sparkling skill. I enjoyed the adventure of your manual.

I think your manual will help a lot to get the leaders more in tune with the victim and help the leaders to help them better. CSA is a minefield for any priesthood leader and being able to spot it is not easy.

Something I thought was very good was that the manual is not actually instructions on "Counselling", giving advice with a view towards healing, but instructions on listening with a view to helping the healing process. I do like the way it is a manual on listening and not advising.

Wish I had had the document 10 - 12 years ago. It would have made a difference to the way I approached things.

This is a much needed piece of work and I hope that it will be accepted and used by the Church worldwide, and especially in my area as we are desperate for this sort of training.

Firstly, may I say what an excellent job of putting together such a much needed program that has long been needed to aid and assist in abusive situations. When it was over I feel I wanted it to be longer as it gives incentive to learn more. I felt that the awareness it brings gives a sense of confidence. I think too often bishops feel alone.

Up till now I was unaware of the dreadful damage CSA has on our brothers and sisters. I realise if I chose to ignore the effects of CSA I would end up hurting or even abusing them again by my ignorance. I think that with the insights you have given me I would be more likely to help the victim to feel heard and recognised as needing loving help from Christ's representative.

A CSA Victim - in USA

CSA has for so long been an invisible issue, both in the secular world and the religious world, that it's wonderful to have it addressed and especially in this way that is so enlightened. My hope is that this manual will reach many, many people that are in positions to guide and help those who have been hurt by this terrible problem.

It was wonderful to read about the Bishop who said to an individual that, because he had never come across it before, he might make mistakes and he would like to be told so that he could learn, but that he would never say anything hurtful intentionally. That would have made all the difference to my situation.
